Our life without us

Saturdays and Sundays both have two shows, so this month, Mondays are my “Sundays”. Sleeping in, taking things easy. But taking things slow does´t mean sitting on the couch watching TV, doing nothing!

The other day I received an invite from the folk high school where I used to work. Every year they host a Peace-festival, and this years theme is “People displaced/fleeing/running away from war (What on earth is the correct English term here?!)” I thought about it for a while, and found it quite a depressing subject, and I didn´t want to paint a picture of some orphan or poor asylum seeker or the equivalent. Instead I thought. What is important to me, to us? What would it be like if I had to leave everything behind?

So I decided to sew a picture (freestyle machine embroidery) of an everyday scene, and simply remove the main characters. Since I am usually the photographer, I´m not in many pictures, so I had to be a little free in my own interpretation. Using a family-photo of two of my close family-members, posing in London. The embroidery is black polyester thread on white linen (with two layers of cotton underneath for support) and is 21x 18 cm (+ the white fabric frame around).  Not sure exactly how to mount it, so I´ll leave it for now. But I do like it, and will definitely make more in the same technique.

I´ve called the picture “Our life without us”
