belt with latin prayer

About a decade ago I designed a summer uniform for the local guide company. It was loosley based on a viking pattern. With a belt with the text from the nearby church. (One of the oldest in Norway) The text is the old latin “Ave Maria, Gracia Plena, Dominus Sanctus” written old-style.

The dresses have been worn a lot, and some of them needed replacing. So today´s task was to make a new belt for one of the dresses. First I freestyle machine-embroider the letters onto water-soluable fabric.

Dissolving the fabric in warm water, and I´m left with only the lacy letters. I then appliqué them onto the  real fabric, which is a raw, natural silk. This makes the letters more 3-D than if I had just sewn them directly onto the fabric.

All done! It looks better with the dress under though 😉

  1. I remember those! I think I even hemmed one of the blue (?) dresses once. The belts are beautiful – what patience you have for going through all those steps. Nice!
