Mica book binding

I attended two classes  at Artfest, in addition to teaching myself. First one up was Dan Essig´s class Book of Mica. I´m such a fan of making books right now, and am fascinated by mica, so this should be fun!

This is one of Dan´s books:

Mica is a mineral, and you can work both with the all natural mica and the man-made mica.

A big class at work.

My first attempt at working with the mica, gluing down decorative paper behind the sheets.

Another version is making holes in the mica and adding paint for a stronger highlight in the pattern.

Working on cutting a hole for a stamp.

And big bonus: I learned the coptic binding. Yay!  Ok, ready to see some of the finished pages? (The following pictures are taken at night, so the lighting doesn´t really do justice to the material.)

The cover:

I decided to call my book “Ruthie-girl goes to Asia”. I used an old childhood photo of my Aunt Ruth as inspiration.

On this page there are a combination of different techniques, including sewing.

I´m very happy with the class, I felt like I learned something, and had a good time creating my little book. I definitely will be including mica in future art-work, one way or the other.

  1. wow Janne, this is so cool, I’ve been experimenting with overhead film and printing on it to get some translucent effects and easily made frames etc (like tunnel books with no tunnel)- but mica, I didn’t even know you could get it

and coptic binding just sounds so good

    cheers from Oz

  2. Love your completed project Janne. If I’d gone to Artfest, I would definitely have taken this class.
