Inspired by Matthew Cusick´s art, I snumbled head-over-heels into my old world atlas, scissors first!
Old, as in out-dated. Countries have come and gone since this was new, when I was kid…
Well, since it´s all about vikings here these days, I thought I´d have a go at a map-portrait. Cut, glued and collaged down. I have to admit to a minor cheating. Even though my atlas is a big book, the maps are all in the same 6-8 colors, and I would have liked at least a couple more. So I did emphesize some of the colors with a light coat of fabric paint. I prefer fabric paint in this case, even though I´m painting on paper, because it is translucent, but more durable than water-color paint. What do you think? Does he look fierce to you?
And by the way, does anybody know what the vikings called Russia?
Wow! Really nice! Didn’t the vikings call Russia “Gardariket”? (Not enirely sure…)
Yes, Gardariket. One of my viking-reenactor-friends just told me. Thank you! 🙂
wow…that looks amazing…I’d like to give it a whirl…you’ll have to fill me in at artfest on how you did it! 🙂
Fun with old maps! Awesome..
