Making a moose

Making a moose-head is this week´s theme. I designed a moose as one of the costumes for PERPLEKS. My good friend and collegue, Grete, is trained as a puppet-maker from Prague, and the moose is all her making. I´ve been working along side her with other projects, but trying to keep an eye on her, so that i can learn how she makes her beautiful art. The mask is part of a costume, which will be worn as a hat on the head.

Well.  She starts off by making a real-size scetch of the head she wants to make, both from the side and from above.  She then finds a big block of styro-foam, and transfers the shapes onto the block, so she has a kind of 3D-pattern to work from.

Using a saw, she cuts away the excess styro-foam. When she has the basic shape defined, she uses a stell-brush, to churn away at the foam, to shape it. Finally, she uses a sharp knife, to make the surface smooth and nice. And she did all this in just one day! I´m amazed!

Once it´s hollowed out, the costume-department takes over…

My own week? Well, I´ve made bricks. Lots of bricks. Brick-walls, single bricks and cobble-stones for the barricade, and even some more bricks for a brick-making factory! Including some roof-tiles.  So that should just about sum it up.
