Indigo dyeing

Indigo is one of the oldest known methods of dyeing. The oldest exambples are 6 000 years old.

Above is the mineral. It needs to be grinded in a grinder into a fine powder. To make it light- and color-fast, you need to add  caustic soda and natriumhydrosulfit. Both strong etching chemicals. The procedure is pretty much the same as with batik dyeing.

And the hues of the color turns out gorgeous. In the mix the fabric looks greenish, but once you take it out, it oxidizes and turns blue.

  1. Yes, this was really fun! One of the techniques I want to work with again. The hues of all the blues are so beautiful, they remind me of the sea! 🙂
