shorttravelled food

You´ve heard of the phrase short-travelled food, I am sure. The idea is to eat food which is grown near where you live, and save the environment from pollution from extensive travels the food takes. A pretty good idea! Well, as it so happens, I just bought my Christmas dinner from my neighbor! I walked 500 meters, visiting my neighbor, and bought some “pinnekjøtt” from him. Pinnekjøtt is dried sheep-ribs. You soak them in water for a full day (or two), and steam them for 3-4 hours. It might seem like an odd thing to eat for dinner, but it is seriously my favorite food! And now, that I can eat the sheep, I can actually see gracing o the fields from my window, it feels double as good. Born, raised, lived, slaughtered, prepared, and eaten all within less than a square mile. How cool! I have to start eating honey as well, so I can get that from him too. Yum!

Pinnekjøtt is served with boiled potatoes, and a carrot & rutabaga-puree. More than a third of Norwegians eat this for Christmas, most of them from the Western part of Norway. The national majority eats pork ribs, and some eat fresh cod. (Mainly in the North)
