Welcome!

I am trying to explore different options, different techniques and different expressions before the big embroidery exhibition next summer.

One thing that´s been quite common around here, a generation or two ago, are these embroidered wall-hangings. Some of them have a saying from the Bible, and other, like this one, welcomes you into the home.

It says “Welcome to our home” in Norwegian.

At first I thought I´d just leave it as an example for what used to be, and then make my own versions. But then I decided, I could actually just undo the text, and embroider a new text on it. It´s fairly kitchy (I think) (Even the guy downstairs exclaimed when he say it on the wall: Is THAT gonna hang there?!!?) Anyway, since it´s all feminine and old-fashioned and cosy and wholesome and all that, I was looking for a text that would say the exact opposite of the illustration. And I think I found it 😉

“Welcome to the Pleasure dome” is the title of Frankie goes to Hollywood´s most famous album back in the 80s. It was controversial enough to have a couple of the songs on it banned from some radio-stations, unless I remember wrong. Very catchy music to dance to back in 1985, and still today the title more than hints to a rather kinky gathering-place…
