B\u00f8mlo Musikallaug, now B\u00f8mlo Theatre, is celebrating it\u00b4s 10 years anniversary by staging a highlights-show from the four biggest musicals we\u00b4ve staged. All taking place in Moster Amphi Theatre, Northern Europe\u00b4s largest outdoor amphi theatre. In B\u00f8mlo, of course \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

(I have about 600 photos to run through, so I\u00b4m going to have to keep adding to this post whenever I have the time.)<\/p>\n

Because of musical-royalties and other legal issues we we not allowed to use costumes for this highlights-version. But people have to wear clothes\u2026 so this time around my job was to a) make them look good and b) make them look like part of a whole and c) give a hint of a feeling of the original musical.<\/p>\n

First up is Jesus Christ Superstar, staged in 1999 and 2001. This was the first show I ever did costume-design for, and boy, was I in for a steep learning-curve!<\/p>\n

Heine Totland plays Jesus. An ensemble of about 40 asks him \u201cWhat\u00b4s the buzz? Tell me what\u00b4s happening?\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Rein Alexander plays Caiphas, angry at the crowd singing praise to Jesus.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And here Espen Hana playing king Herod, with his charleston-dancing crew. The dresses the girls are wearing were used in the original staging in -01.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

No less than 4 Marys in the highlights-version, three of whom I sewed dresses for.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Tonje Bakken in an asymmetrical pink-yellow rayon-cotton dress.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Elisabeth Moberg in her long bias-cut taffeta gown.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And finally Britt Synn\u00f8ve Johannsen in her draped dress.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Finally, Sigurd Sele plays Judas. This guy gives everything on stage, and strictly wouldn\u00b4t need a microphone, as he has lungs worthy of an elephant \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cJesus Christ Superstar! Do you think you\u00b4re what they say you are?\u201d<\/p>\n

Next up is Miss Saigon<\/strong>. Staged for the first time in Norway at Moster in 2009, directed by Lisa Kent, who also had the direction for this show.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The love story of American Chris and Vietnamese Kim, played by Rune Svendsen and Mareike Wang.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Rein leads the soldiers in the male choir, singing \u201cBui Doi\u201d, (the dust of life). About the unwanted children of mixed raced parents, living in orphanages in Vietnam.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Pure male choir-song can be incredibly beautiful!<\/p>\n

And then there is \u201cAmerican Dream\u201d! Two engineers for the occation, Helge Jordal and Sigurd Sele.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This Ginger Rodgers dress was newly made. I made the pattern and did the finishes, while my good friend Elisabeth Bogen did the sewing.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I also had to make a new Liberty, played by Britt Synn\u00f8ve. Not a great angle of the draped flag, but what can you do..<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Another dress I made was for Marilyn Monroe, alias Elisabeth.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Moving ever so swiftly on. After the interval, came Chess, written by Benny Anderson and Bj\u00f8rn Ulvaeus and Tim Rice. Norwegian premiere in Moster Amfi in 2006, directed by Birgit Amalie Nielsen.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

My original costumes for this show were all cream in the first half, and then brightly warm colored in the second half. For the highlights-version, we made them very formal black and white. No shock \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The musical conductor, Bj\u00f8rn Skagestad, trying to conduct both the choir in Merano, and Helge in base-drum, Sigurd on a triangle and Espen with cymbals\u2026<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Rein\u00b4s version of \u201cAnthem\u201d harvested massive applause.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Tiny Britt Synn\u00f8ve with the big, big voice.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cCause I\u00b4m the arbiter, I know the score!\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Heine\u00b4s \u201cPity the child\u201d is so beautifully moving it hurts.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The beautiful Susanne dances like a dream.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cDid I plan, doing all of this, for the love of a man?\u201d askes the lovely Elisabeth, quietly accompanied by Sigurd on his guitar.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And why not go with a bang?! In \u201cOne night in Bangkok\u201d, \u00d8ystein Kausrud arrives on the rock shelf dresses as a temple-dancer, to blow fire.<\/p>\n

Hang on for the last chapter of the show: Les Miserables!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

First, all the Lovely Ladies.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Elisabeth as Fantine.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Tonje as Eponine.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And what is Les Miserables without Master of the house?!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Actually, TWO masters of the house!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And of course, the misses \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Rein as Jean Valjean singing \u201cBring him home\u201d. OMG! Favorite-song-alert!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Sigurd, as Enjolras, encouraging the people in song:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Do you hear the people sing?<\/p>\n

Singing a song of angry men<\/p>\n

it is the music of the people<\/p>\n

who will not be slaves again<\/p>\n

When the beating of your heart<\/p>\n

echoes the beating of the drums<\/p>\n

there is a life about to start<\/p>\n

when tomorrow comes.<\/p>\n
