Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen<\/strong> 16 July 1872 \u2013 <\/span>c.<\/span><\/a> 18 June 1928) was a <\/span>Norwegian<\/span><\/a> <\/span>explorer<\/span><\/a> of <\/span>polar regions<\/span><\/a>. He led the first <\/span>Antarctic<\/span><\/a> expedition to reach the <\/span>South Pole<\/span><\/a> between 1910 and 1912. He was also the first person to reach both the <\/span>North<\/span><\/a> and South Poles.<\/span> He is known as the first to traverse the <\/span>Northwest Passage<\/span><\/a>. He disappeared in June 1928 while taking part in a <\/span>rescue mission<\/span><\/a>.
