And I have to admit, it was a lot more fun than I thought. Then a solid presentation of all the birds used for feather-“production”. From turkey and goose to peacock, pheasant and ostrich. We got a whole bunch of feathers, trying to decide which came from what bird. 🙂

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-14457" title="_MG_5967" src="http://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/MG_5967.gif" alt="" width="350" height="525" ="https://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/MG_5967.gif 350w, https://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/MG_5967-150x225.gif 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px">

Time for technique! We learned how to make a feather boa. Using ostrich feathers, learning how to “strip” the feathery part from the quill, I ended up with lots of strands like the one below.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-14458" title="_MG_5969" src="http://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/MG_5969.gif" alt="" width="450" height="277" ="https://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/MG_5969.gif 450w, https://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/MG_5969-150x92.gif 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px">

Steaming it to make if soft and fluffy. Sewing the strands together again, onion each side, symmetrically, to layers (Which the instructor confusingly called four layers). For the really big ones, you can use as much as 6 layers, sewing down one at a time. Finally you add a thick cotton thread which has sewn down soft goose-feathers on it.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-14460" title="_MG_5977" src="http://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/MG_5977.gif" alt="" width="450" height="272" ="https://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/MG_5977.gif 450w, https://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/MG_5977-150x90.gif 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px">

And the secret to making this flat thing look fluffy?

Twist it!
