How do you get young people to embody new, scientific knowledge? How do you teach young people about the ocean and the arts, without art being “just a fun method” of learning? How do you raise not only awareness, but engagement for the ocean?

These are only some of the questions we tried to look at during our pilot-project of Global Hands On Ocean. The theme was plankton, understanding what they are, what they do and why we need them (and then some). Only 5 % of te ocean has been discovered yet, there is literally a sea of unchartered territories waiting to be discovered and explored!

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-22150" src="http://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/MG_1147-450x300.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="300" ="https://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/MG_1147.jpg 450w, https://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/MG_1147-150x100.jpg 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px">

During 6 hours over the course of three weeks, the 8th graders learned quite a lot about the planktons, they created their own plankton on a stamp, they made little films explaining the marine food-system, even a choreographed human installation.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-22151" src="http://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/MG_1156-450x300.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="300" ="https://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/MG_1156.jpg 450w, https://www.spindelmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/MG_1156-150x100.jpg 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px">

How do you combine the fields of science and arts, where both subjects are equal and contributive to the learning process?
